Wychavon has once again ‘panned’ the competition at this year’s Loo of the Year Awards.
Judges named Wychavon’s loos the Best Local Authority toilets in England and the United Kingdom for the second year running.
The district’s conveniences are also top of the Toilet Premier League and Wychavon is the only public sector organisation to be awarded a prestigious Champions League spot.
Overall, nine of Wychavon’s toilets were given the highest possible award of Diamond status with Abbey Park in Evesham’s and Pershore High Street loos being given a Platinum Plus award.
The Loo of the Year Awards started in 1987 to recognise and encourage the need for the highest standards of ‘away from home washrooms’. They provide an independent assessment of the standard of hygiene, repair and facilities at each toilet.
Wychavon has invested heavily in improving and upgrading its toilets over the last six years. Work has included installing energy and water saving propelair toilets, solar panels, LED lighting, grey water harvesting and combined tap/hand driers.
Dedicated facilities for people with a variety of disabilities, known as Changing Places toilets, have been created in St Andrew’s Square, Droitwich, Church Close in Broadway, Oat Street and Waterside in Evesham and Church Walk in Pershore. Work is underway to install two more in Broadway Activity Park and Lido Park in Droitwich.
Cllr Emma Stokes, Executive Board Member for Resident and Customer Service on Wychavon District Council, said: “We know our toilets are valued by residents and visitors and now we have independent confirmation of what we already believed, that our loos really are amongst the best in the country and we were right to continue to invest in them.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to our contractors Mitie and their cleaning staff who do a tremendous job looking after our toilets every day throughout the year.”
